Language learning: Books & multimedia

A guide to Library resources for those learning a new language
You can access language learning books and multimedia in the Library building, and online.
  • The language learning books and multimedia are on the 3rd Floor of the Library.
  • Large sized books are shelved separately from other books, for practical reasons. You will find your key section (the 400s) in both large and normal sized sections.
  •  A large number of films in their original language are on the 3rd Floor, shelved at 791.437.
  • View the 3rd Floor plan (PDF)

To find out if a specific book is in the Library you just need to check the Enterprise catalogue (search box below). Enter the author's surname and one or two words from the title:

For example: bissar foundations french will find the location of the book Foundations French 1, edited by Dounia Bissar, Helen Phillips & Cécile Tschirhart.

You can also search Enterprise for a topic, to find related books.

Finding online book chapters

To find online book chapters on a topic search the Summon discovery service:

Borrowing print items

You may request most items in the Library to be collected for you to borrow. Request an item online and we will email to let you know when it is ready to collect.

You may browse the books on the shelves and borrow them yourself using the Self-service Points on the Ground floor. Sanitiser and cleaning materials will be available, please use these to clean the Self-service Point screen before and after use.

If you can't find the book you need, please place a hold via the Click & Collect service and we will find it for you.

You are encouraged to wear a face covering (unless exempt) whilst using any public area in the building.

Library staff will be working on the floors to reshelve books throughout the day.

You can also browse the shelves virtually on the Enterprise catalogue.

Please return any items you've borrowed from the Library via the Book sorter on the Ground Floor of the Library. Alternatively you may return books in the external Book Drop, located to the right of the main Library entrance.

Closed Access collections will take place at 14:00 each Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Off-site Store collections take place on Thursday each week. You will receive an email when your items are ready to collect - loanable items can be collected from the Click & Collect area, on the North side of the building (Palmer quad opposite the Palmer and Carrington buildings.) Reference only items need to be consulted in the Library and can be collected from the Welcome Desk.

You are expected to wear a face covering (unless exempt) whilst using any public area in the library building.

Getting books not held at Reading

Our Inter-Library Loans service can get books not held at Reading from other libraries (usually from the British Library).

For more information see our webpages:

New books

Using e-books

You can read ebooks online, through the Library catalogue Enterprise. Use the Enterprise search boxes on this page to find books on your topic, and watch the video below for a demonstration of finding online books only.

If you are unable to view this video on YouTube it is also available on Stream - view the Finding an e-book using Enterprise video on Stream (University username and password required)

Using our online resources from home

When you are off-campus we recommend that you follow links from the Library's webpages, Enterprise, Summon, or your subject guide. Following these links will often (but not always) direct you to login straight away with your University username and password.

You login in the same way as for Blackboard - via Microsoft. Just enter your University username followed by @student.reading.ac.uk (e.g. ab123456@student.reading.ac.uk) and your password. If this is the first time you have logged in via this method when off-campus you will be asked to complete a Multi-Factor Authentication

Once you've logged in, you are then identified as a member of the University of Reading, and the book, search engine, or article database knows that you are a member of the University, and are allowed access to the material. You will not normally be asked to login again during that browser session.

Although you can search for information using a general web search, you will often find that you’re not able to access the information that you need – so it’s best to use the Library webpages first.

If Single Sign On does not appear...

If you have followed a link from our website or catalogues and you are not able to access the resource straight away you may need to look for a login option. Look for an institutional or shibboleth login option and pick 'University of Reading' from a list of institutions. This will direct you to login as above.

Accessing resources remotely

This series of videos covers accessing books, journal articles and primary sources when working away from campus. They include finding online Library resources and freely available material too.

If you are unable to watch these videos on YouTube they are also available on Stream (University username and password required):

To find a book you will need to use the Library’s Enterprise search – this is the first box on the Library homepage or use the box below. When you have searched, use the filters on the left-hand side to limit to Online only. To access an e-book online, click on the access link, and you will be prompted to login with your University username (e.g. ab123456@student.reading.ac.uk) and password. You can read e-books online, and can sometimes download part or all of a book to keep.

If the book that you need isn't available as an e-book, please contact your Academic Liaison Librarian, and they may be able to purchase a copy.

Search Enterprise for e-books

Try Google books

If you need access to a specific book it is always worth trying Google Books. Although you won't find the complete text, it might provide the section you need.

To find chapters in books or online journal articles you can use the Library’s Summon search – this is the second box on the Library homepage or use the box below. Once you have run your search use the options on the left hand side to select the information that you need, for example journal articles, scholarly and peer review material. Everything that you see in your results can be accessed online - click the title or the Full Text Online link.

If the article or chapter that you need isn't available online, please contact your Academic Liaison Librarian, and they may be able to help find alternative access.

Search Summon for online book chapters and journal articles
