Reassessment toolkit: your guide to success

Our guide can help to support you with any resubmission you need to do, whether you need to re-sit an exam or re-write an assignment.

Dealing with emotions

Not getting the grades you hoped for can lead to feelings of disappointment, failure or even shame. Such feelings are common and many of us can relate to them. While it is important to acknowledge these emotions, we can learn to manage them to move forwards as part of our development. Recognising that it is the work that we have produced, not us, that has failed to meet the criteria, is a first step; and acknowledging that we can all misunderstand requirements or exam questions sometimes is helpful to remember. What is important is what you do now. Our guide can help to support you with any resubmission you need to do, whether you need to re-sit an exam or re-write an assignment.

Checklist of actions

Below is a list of actions for you to ensure you are prepared for your resubmission:

  • Find out what the grade means for your course. If you have more than one assessment for the module you may not have failed the module overall; in addition, you may not have to pass the module to pass the year overall and progress. This will affect your right to reassessment.
  • Speak to your Academic Tutor/Programme Director if you're not sure whether you can/need to resit/resubmit.
  • Do you have any exceptional circumstances which meant that you were unable to perform at your best? Have you informed your Academic Tutor or Director of Academic Tutoring? This may impact the range of grades you can attain at resubmission, so it is important to talk to someone about this as soon as possible.
  • Have you selected your reassessment options via RISIS? You should have received a link to this, if applicable, in your results email.
  • Do you know exactly what is required of you? Make sure you read the briefs carefully and, if you are going to be resitting an exam, you are familiar with the structure and what will be tested.
  • Now make a plan to complete the work. This may include revision planning or researching. The below will help guide you with this.
