The new display in the foyer in the Brian Hoskins building is a celebration of the life of James Milford - James Milford joined the Department of Meteorology upon its inception in 1966, being appointed the Department’s first lecturer. He worked alongside Professor Reginald Sutcliffe (who founded the Department). James helped to build the Meteorology teaching aspects, especially the MSc in its early years. This included planning the layout of TOB 2 and campaigning for a ‘permanent instrumental enclosure’. He was very keen on helping overseas development in the meteorological area and led on the initiation of teaching links with Ibadan, Nigeria and Bogor, Indonesia. His dedication to research resulted in a rich publication history, particularly in the remote sensing of rain, and also bringing together collaborative work with the Department of Agriculture.

James Milford had a great impact on the development of the remote sensing of rain. He was leader of the TAMSAT (Tropical Applications of Meteorology using SATellite data and ground-based observations) research group, which, formed in the early 1980s, has been providing rainfall data from across the African continent. The project team and research group exist to this day, having provided decades of operational datasets helping to warn of rainfall related events such as drought and flooding.
