EndNote: EndNote Click

Information and guidance on using Desktop EndNote and EndNote online to manage bibliographic references.

EndNote Click is a browser plugin which helps you access full-text PDFs and you can use it to add those to EndNote.

Key benefits

  1. It links with the Library to give you seamless access to articles covered by our journal subscriptions. It also searches for Open Access versions to try to find the full article.
  2. When you visit an article page on a publisher's website EndNote click will search for the full-text PDF and gives one-click access via a popup button.
  3. When you search on databases such as Web of Science and PubMed, EndNote Click searches for PDFs and gives you one-click access.
  4. All the articles you access via EndNote Click are stored in your 'Locker' for easy access, and you can add them to Desktop or Web EndNote from there.

Note that some publishers don't co-operate with EndNote Click - so far we have identified Elsevier and Sage. Although you will be able to access the PDF via the EndNote Click 'Search Institution Library' button, it is not possible to transfer the PDF to your EndNote Click locker and then into EndNote. You would need to download the PDF and manually add it to the relevant reference in EndNote. Both Elsevier and Sage have the option to download the reference details to EndNote via their 'Cite' options, which you could then attach the downloaded PDF to.

Support for using EndNote Click

Watch this short video from the University of Hull Library on installing and using the EndNote Click plug-in. Note that we also offer an inter-library loan service if there are articles you need which are not available via Library subscriptions or on Open Access.

Using a tablet?

If you are using a tablet or another device which you can't download Desktop EndNote onto, you can still collect references and add them to your EndNote Library using EndNote Click. Just follow these steps:

  1. Install Desktop EndNote on your laptop so that you can use its full functionality and link it with Word.
  2. After creating a library (file) use the 'Sync' option in Desktop EndNote to create an EndNote Web account which will synchronise with your library. Use a personal email address so that you can still access password reminders once you have left the University. Do not use your Uni password - create a new one.
  3. Install the EndNote Click add-in on your browser and click on it. Click on the 'Get started' to create an account - you could use the same email address and password you used to set up Sync.
  4. When browsing the web or searching on databases look out for the EndNote Click button and click on this to access the full PDF.
  5. When viewing the PDF in EndNote Click select the option in the side panel to 'Push to EndNote Web'. The first time you do this you will prompted to login to your EndNote Web account - just use the same email address and password you used when setting up the Sync option on Desktop EndNote.
  6. When you next open Desktop EndNote on your laptop it will automatically synchronise with EndNote Web and download the reference details and PDFs to your library. You can now cite these articles using the EndNote Cite While You Write Word add-in.

Issues with EndNote Click

Clash with LibKey Nomad

If you have already added the LibKey Nomad extension to your browser you will find the EndNote Click tab also appears in the bottom left of your browser window and mostly obscures it. You will need to close the EndNote Click tab to see the LibKey access options.
